Tips To Winterize Your Home
MIAMISBURG -- Fall is here, which means it's time to get your home ready for winter before the cold weather blows in. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends spending a few bucks now on winterizing your home to reduce heating costs by up to 30 percent.
"You're just foolish if you're not trying to seal that heat in," said Dana Fox with Home Depot.
Fox recommends using caulking and weather stripping around doors and windows to reduce leaks, which keeps the warm air in and the cold air out.
"You're pumping heat into the house and it goes right out all those cracks. You're heating the outside. Your electric bill, fuel bill is going to go up. You want to keep the heat in the house for as long as you can," he said.
Door sweeps are another good investment., especially if you have a visible gap between the bottom of the door and the ground.
"I have a chair that I sit in near a door and until I sealed it off, I could feel a draft on my right on until I sealed it off," Fox said.
Fox also says putting plastic up over windows is another great energy saver.
"You actually seal that whole window off. It's like adding another pane of glass," he said.
Adding additional insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces can also lead to lower energy costs, keeping you house warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
"You get the benefit all year round," Fox said.
Keep in mind, most attics need about 12-15 inches of insulation for the best efficiency.
