Labor Day Weekend Travel
PIQUA -- As the holiday weekend comes to a close, so does heavy highway congestion throughout the Miami Valley.
We talked with an Ohio State Highway Patrol official who tells us the interstate was crowded all weekend and was significantly heaver than last Labor Day weekend.
AAA estimates nearby 30 million people hit the roadways this weekend.
"Coming from Kentucky across Covington into Cincinnati is very backed up. It's a lot of traffic, a lot of trucks, and a lot officers," Allen Gilbert described his journey back to Flint, Mich.
And scattered visibly amongst the congestion is the Highway Patrol.
"We're out with 80 percent of our available force so we're maintaining the interstate and trying to keep that presence and make it a safe commute for everybody, " Piqua Highway Patrol Sgt. Vee Witcher said Monday.
If you have been on 75 in Piqua at any time today you have probably seen troopers along the highway.
"Definitely! With all their guns and we don't have that in Illinois, " Mary Ann Veeneman of Olympia Fields, Ill., said. "There's so much traffic no one could go fast anyway!"
Well some people managed, the Piqua post issued 302 traffic tickets in this area over the weekend.
"Ten OVIs, 64 seat belt arrests, one felony apprehension and one misdemeanor. So we've been pretty active but its been relatively mild considering the volume in our area," Sgt. Witcher explained.
The Piqua Post investigated three crashes but no other significant incidents occurred.
PIQUA -- Ohio State Highway Patrol works to keep the roads safe as heavy traffic floods Interstate 75.
AAA estimates nearly 30 million people hit the roadways for Labor Day Weekend and here in the Miami valley, we've had our fair share of commuter traffic.
80% of the Piqua Post has been on duty this weekend. We talked with highway patrol who tells us they have seen moderate to heavy traffic throughout the weekend.
We're told no significant events have occurred on their stretch of highway, but troopers have still had their hands full.
"10 OVIs, 64 seat belt arrests, 1 felony apprehension and 1 misdemeanor. So we've been pretty active, but it's been relatively mild considering the volume in our area," Piqua Highway Patrol Sgt. Vee Witcher said Monday.
Over the weekend, the Piqua Post has also issued 302 traffic tickets and investigated 3 crashes in the area.
