Community Speaks out on Mother Accused of Faking Son's Abduction

HARRISON TOWNSHIP -- A community is speaking out about a mother who is accused of faking her son's abduction.

The mother, 25-year-old Jade Smith, told 911 dispatchers someone took her baby.

"I was just right here. Oh my God, I'm panicking. I was just right here, that's all I was doing, (inaudible) and somebody had to take my baby," Jade Smith said to dispatchers on Friday.

Sheriff's deputies swarmed the area to search for 3-year-old Kevin Hunter.

"Where are you baby? Where are you baby?" said Smith on the 911 call, "Somebody took my baby."

As it turns out, according to deputies, it was all a lie to get back at the child's father.

"Poor little boy was probably frightened and hungry, and I think it's a very crazy thing to do," said Gary, a Dayton resident.

"I think it's ridiculous, trying to teach somebody a lesson," said Chelsea Thurlkill, another Dayton resident. "I think there are better ways to do that."

Six hours after initially reporting Kevin missing, deputies found him hiding in his grandmother's bushes.

A sigh of relief for family members who stand by Smith even after she was arrested.

"I know she is a good mother and it had to be something seriously happen with her," said Tuesday Etchison, the child's grandmother on Friday after Smith's arrest.

But for the community on the outside looking in, it's a very different feeling.

"She should have to pay for the overtime," said Thurlkill. "She induced panic, not just for the police but for everybody watching the news, her family, and she knew exactly what she was doing."

On Friday, Smith was charged with inducing panic and child endangering. She is expected to face a judge Monday morning.

According to the jail's website, she's charged with making false alarms and the child endangering charge was dropped.
