Dayton Mayor's Last Neighborhood Walk
DAYTON -- It was a bittersweet evening for outgoing Dayton Mayor Gary Leitzell as he hosted his last "Mayor's Walk" Monday night.
In a few months, a new mayor will be elected to lead the city of Dayton. We spoke with the candidates and current mayor, and they all agree, the next mayor's focus has to be on jobs.
"We've always been known as the city of innovation and we need to keep the innovators coming. I think for the longest time people saw City Hall as a roadblock and in the four years I've been here we've been able to open up those doors more," Leitzell said.
In his time as mayor, Leitzell says he's worked with the community to encourage small business development and job creation. He hopes the next mayor does the same thing.
"Just creating self-employment. Creating more of a focus on helping entrepreneurs succeed, because that's what Dayton was founded on," he said.
However, voters weren't as impressed with Leitzell's work. He lost his bid for a second term in the primary, beat out by current mayoral candidates, former judge A.J. Wagner and current City Commissioner Nan Whaley.
"We have to bring people back to the city. We have to find ways to encourage businesses to come to the city," Wagner said.
Wagner also says the city needs to focus on cleaning up neighborhoods, which will in turn attract new business owners. Voters we talked to couldn't agree more.
"Now it's time to put the community back together and resurface our roads. That's one of the things we're hoping the city looks at," said Twin Towers Neighborhood Association President Leslie Sheward.
Nan Whaley was out of town, and unavailable for an on-camera comment. But we talked to her on the phone. She says job creation will also be her primary focus if elected.
