Driver In Fatal Wrong-Way Crash Identified
BEAVERCREEK -- A Kettering man is dead after a fiery collision between a car and a semi on 35 East at 675.
Beavercreek Police said they began receiving numerous calls around 6:35 p.m. about a red Chevy driving the wrong way on US 35. As the calls kept coming in, police quickly received a call about the car hitting the semi at 6:40 p.m.
The driver of the red Chevy, Michael D. Luthman, 44, of Kettering was pronounced dead on the scene.
The driver of the semi truck received only minor injuries.
35 East was shut down for six and a half hours Tuesday night as Beavercreek Police investigated what caused the collision.
Firefighters said the car caught fire at impact and was almost completely wedged beneath the truck.
When fire crews arrived the car was still on fire with flames high in the air and they used two engines worth of water to extinguish the fire.
Fire Department says they responded in 3 1/2 minutes, which is quite remarkable considering all of the calls to 911 as people drove by the accident.
"I believe our dispatchers took quite a few calls on this event. It was in a high traffic time. They were dealing with a lot of calls while sending responders to the scene," Battalion Chief Nathan Hiester, Beavercreek FD explained on scene.
At first, fire officials said the body is so distorted and burnt, they don't know if the driver was male or female.
Beavercreek police are working with the Greene County Coroner's office to determine if alcohol was involved.
Police ask anyone who may have witnessed the accident, or observed the car entering the highway in the wrong direction, to please call them at 426-1225.
