UPDATE: Stand Your Ground Town Hall Meeting
DAYTON -- Right now, 24 states already have Stand Your Ground laws, but will Ohio be the 25th?
Ohio lawmakers are considering a bill that would bring the law to the Buckeye State.
A group of locals against the bill held a town hall meeting Thursday night.
"We already have enough laws to prevent and protect people in Ohio. We don't need Stand Your Ground like Florida. We all know what happened in Florida," says Richard Clay Dixon with the Miami Valley Action Committee.
The death of Trayvon Martin and the not-guilty verdict of his shooter is still heavy on the hearts of those in attendance. But there are some who feel Stand Your Ground would create a safer Ohio.
"If they're already a victim of a crime, and that's where Stand Your Ground comes into play, you shouldn't have to consider if you're going to be charged," says Joe Eaton with Buckeye Firearm Association.
Eaton says House Bill 203 is simply an extension of a law that's already been in play for over a decade. The Castle Doctrine says if you're attacked in your home or your car you have the right to defend yourself.
"If you're standing outside your car and you're victim to a violent attack you do not have that assumption. HB 203 would expand the assumption to when you're outside your car," explains Eaton.
No matter what side of the debate you're on, there is no doubt that there's a storm brewing.
The next step for those against the bill is to sign as many petitions as possible and give them to our state legislators before the general assembly is slated to act on HB 203 in the fall.
DAYTON -- A town hall meeting tonight is planned to discuss issues surrounding the proposed "Stand Your Ground" legislation in Ohio, which is designated HB 203.
Community members, faith leaders, civil rights advocates and others are planning to attend the event to discuss the implications for the Dayton area.
The town hall is planning for 6 p.m. Thursday at Corinthian Baptist Church, 700 S. James H. McGee Blvd., Dayton.
Controversy arose regarding Stand Your Ground following the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla. George Zimmerman was found not guilty of murdering Martin and that Martin was acting in self-defense.
Expected to attend are Fred Strahorn, State Representative of Ohio District 39; Derrick L. Foward, President of Dayton Unit NAACP; Vernilia Randal, Retired Professor of Law, University of Dayton; Sean Walton, Dayton Human Relations Council and Harris Tay, Executive Director, Wesley Community Center.
