Local Girl Models on National Down Syndrome Campaigns
DAYTON -- Meet 16-month-old Joy Minor if you haven't already. She's the face on a couple toys from Infantino's Everybody Plays campaign available at Target. She's also modeled for Sweet Petunia Clothing and done photo and commercial shoots with Dayton Children's Hospital.
But these national modeling contracts are not what keeps her smiling.
"Joy is really cheerful around me when I get home from school. She likes to clap and blow me kisses," said her brother Jay.
"We were supposed to have Joy and Joy just happens to have Down syndrome," said her dad Paul.
"I think any time you're talking about your hopes and dreams for your child just like anybody's hopes and dreams to get emotional because we want the best for her," said her mom Jessica.
Wednesday, installers put up a billboard for the Buddy Walk. You'll notice the face of the billboard is Joy.
"She's a spotlight," said Buddy Walk chairwoman Dawn Koesters. "She looks great, she's a great little girl, she's got a lot of personality and I think she's really shown everyone in the Down syndrome community that our kids can do anything we want. And people can really learn from us. She's our poster child on all the billboards in everywhere so we are very excited to have her be a part of the community."
Buddy Walk happens every year at Fifth Third Field to promote awareness and inclusion for people with Down syndrome. The money made from the walk helps to offset some of the costs for the 200 families in the Miami Valley who have a child with the disorder.
"Joy is really tough sometimes and fun sometimes, too. Being a big brother is kind of hard and frustrating and very cool, too," said Jay.
Now as you drive down Needmore Road, you'll get to see the Joy that brightens the day for this family every minute.
"People with Down syndrome are people who just happen to have one extra chromosome in their body and they're just like us. They want to be happy, they want to have fun, they want to learn new things and have new experiences," said Paul.
