Toddler Still Critical After Near Drowning in Neighborhood Pool

WEST CARROLLTON -- Police are still investigating what happened at an apartment complex pool after a toddler was found unresponsive Thursday.

Police tell us the 22-month-old girl was still in critical condition Friday in the ICU at Dayton Children's Hospital.

Investigators are still working to determine when and how the little girl ended up in the pool.

West Carrollton Police released the 911 call in which a frantic neighbor can be heard saying:

"This is Villa South Gardens condominiums ... the pool ... we need somebody here ... a baby ... they just pulled out of the pool."

Witnesses tell us a neighbor saw the little girl floating and rushed to the child's side and performed CPR before police arrived.

"He went over to try to help but her lips were already blue. They were trying to resuscitate her and water was coming out but there was no response," neighbor Brittany Beasley explained.

Moments later the pool was wrapped in yellow tape and swimming with investigators.

The toddler was rushed to Sycamore and then Dayton Children's Hospital where she started to breathe again.

Investigators tell us the little girl's mother was nearby at the time of the incident, but its still unclear how she got inside the gated pool and fell in.

The voice on the 911 call said:

"I don't know if the mother was with her. It didn't look like it."

"We're trying to determine what type of incident it could fall under. Whether it was negligence or just a terrible accident," West Carrollton Dept. Chief Douglas Woodard said.

This is the first case of its kind this summer for the West Carrollton Police Department and they want to keep it that way.

"Have some type of flotation device if they're of the appropriate age. Make sure you know where they're at at all times. Don't turn your back on them for a minute. The pool is supposed to be fun but there's responsibilities attached to that," Chief Woodard added.

The investigation into this near-tragedy continues.

Earlier coverage:

WEST CARROLLTON -- A 22 month-old girl is in the hospital after nearly drowning in her neighborhood pool.

Officials are investigating this incident, but the good news is the toddler is at Dayton children's with a heartbeat and is expected to live.

Police received a call around 2:30 p.m. that a small child was floating in the South Belle Gardens pool unresponsive.  Police say when they arrived the child was next to the pool and neighbors were performing CPR.

According to police, the little girl was with her mother at the pool, and there was no one else around at the time of the accident.  It's unclear if the little girl was inside the pool at the time or if she fell in.

"It's a little too early to tell if there's any negligence involved. We're trying to determine what type of incident it could fall under, whether it was negligence or just a terrible accident," says Dept. Chief Douglas Woodard.
