Summer Camps Changing Routine to Keep Kids Safe in Heat
TROTWOOD -- YMCA Summer Camp works to keep kids cool in the extreme heat.
This heat and humidity isn't just uncomfortable it can be dangerous, especially for children.
Local summer camps are changing up their routine to keep kids safe and cool during playtime.
Six-year-old Javerre Huffman is one happy camper.
"We're going to jump off the diving board!" he said.
But his third pool day of the week is a strategic move.
"The kids love the water so for half of our day we're in the water," Michele Gullette, YMCA Summer Camp Director, told us.
Gullette says the main priority of her job is keeping her kids safe. With the increased pool time, watching for dehydration in the water is still critical.
"We keep them hydrated as they participate in their activities. They're getting water breaks every 15 minutes or so," Gullette explained Thursday.
To ensure campers aren't over-exerting themselves physically, the Trotwood Y has also increased what Michele calls "quiet activities" in the kids' daily routine.
"We're under the trees and we're resting. We're looking up at clouds to find shapes and craft things," Gullette said.
But even during down time, camp counselors are trained to watch for signs of heat exhaustion.
"When they are not wanting to participate and lying around, or going to sleep, or tired we know there's a problem," she said.
But so far, no heat-related issues have been reported at the camp.
Just a lot of intense fun, in this intense sun.
