UPDATE:Toddler Hospitalized After Overdose of Blood Pressure Medicine
UPDATE: DAYTON--A baby is hospitalized after getting into her grandmother's blood pressure medication.
The pills were left on a night stand and 11 month old baby swallowed an unknown amount of pills.
"The night stand was only about a foot and a half tall. And the child was at the age where she was walking and she pulled her self up and got to the pills and got them in her mouth and that is all it takes." Dayton Police Sgt. Matthew Dickey said.
The baby girl was rushed to Dayton Children's Hospital, where she is expected to be okay.
Cassie Dugger, a Dayton mother of two, said she keeps medications out of reach.
"I try to keep it up and locked up in the medicine cabinet where my son can't reach it. Not even the lower shelf, I even put them up higher where he can't even get close to it." She said.
"Up and away" is exactly where medications should be kept, according to Jessica Saunders, injury prevention coordinator at Dayton Children's Hospital.
She said there are other ways to prevent children from getting into medications.
"Think about what is in your purse. Little kids can get into stuff, and they are quick. And little kids don't know what is medicine and what isn't, so never call it candy."
Sgt. Dickey said the grandmother, who was baby-sitting, will most likely not face any charges. "This appears to be just an accident. Clearly, this is a hard lesson to learn by the family."
DAYTON -- A toddler was hospitalized this morning after getting into her grandmother's blood pressure medication at 2910 Revels Avenue.
Dayton Police say the girl, about 1 year old, got into the medicine on a nightstand while the grandmother was babysitting. Authorities don't know how much the child ingested but her condition is not considered life-threatening. She will be kept overnight at Dayton Children's Hospital for observation.
Police say the incident appears accidental and they have not charged anyone, however, the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office will review the case.
