UPDATE: 3 Yr Old Rescued from Little Miami River
SPRING VALLEY TWP. -- A little boy is recovering after he was pulled out of the Little Miami River in Greene County.
A leisurely family canoe trip on the Little Miami River took a horrifying turn Tuesday afternoon when a 3-year-old boy fell in the water.
The child's mother said her little boy was blue and unresponsive when she pulled him out of the water.
Luckily, a nearby canoeist saw the events unfold and called for help.
"Someone was passing by with a cellphone but they didn't know their location. That's why we had to cover such a large area of the river tying to find their location," Spring Valley Township Fire Chief Marvin Moeller told ABC 22/FOX 45.
Four fire departments were dispatched and three boats were launched at separate locations. Emergency responders tell us it took 20 minutes to locate the group and the recovering toddler.
Chief Moeller says it's important to bring your cellphone with you on the water. If you have to make an emergency phone call, it's just as important to know where you are because waterways like the Little Miami River go on for miles.
"Try to be familiar with your surrounding. If you've gone by a street, park, bridge. Give us a location because we have a large area of this river to cover," Moeller explained Tuesday.
And within that area, Moeller says the river can be anywhere from 3 inches to 10 feet deep and 'walking the river' is highly dangerous.
It is unclear if the child was wearing a life vest at the time of the accident.
SPRING VALLEY -- A little boy is expected to be OK after falling out of a canoe on the Little Miami River.
Officers tell us the 3 year old was canoeing with his mom, dad and two other children when he fell out.
A witness in another canoe saw him fall out and called 911.
The dad was able to pull his son out of the water.
When emergency crews arrived on scene, the child was conscious and breathing. He was taken to Dayton Children's Hospital as a precaution.
We'll have a live report on ABC 22 News at 6 and Fox 45 News at 6:30.
