Kettering Police Cracking Down on Panhandlers
KETTERING -- Police say they've noticed an increase in panhandlers since the summer and are issuing citations to those who aren't as honest as you think.
ABC 22/ FOX 45 Reporter Annette Peagler went to the areas where police say these panhandlers are frequently targeting. Those areas are the intersection of West Dorothy Lane and South Dixie, around the Meijer on Stroop Road and also off Woodman in Kettering.
"I mean those are large intersections and they handle a lot of traffic through busy times of the day so a lot more people have exposure to that," said Officer Ron Roberts with Kettering Police. "One particular female has been cited several times down near South Dixie and West Dorothy for her behavior and her panhandling."
"I've been victim to them a couple of times," said Abdul Basit of Miamisburg.
"I think it's justified that they are cracking down," said Deanne Wilcox of Kettering. "This is the closest Walmart and I'm here all the time and they’re always on the corners."
While you may feel like a good Samaritan helping one out, you may also be getting scammed.
"A gentleman he had a sign up about vets and homeless and he claimed that he was just holding a sign up that he wasn't actually homeless, he claimed he was just raising money," said Officer Roberts.
After investigating, police found that man was indeed not homeless and was actually ripping people off. Police say thanks to community tips, officers have been able to catch a number of panhandlers in Kettering.
Officers have issued at least a dozen citations within the last few weeks. They encourage people to be cautious and mindful of who you give your money to and if you notice something suspicious report it by calling 937-296-2555.
Miami Valley Crime StoppersIf you have information about a crime that has occurred, call Miami Valley Crime Stoppers at 937-222-7867 (STOP) 800-637-5735, 24 hours a day. Callers can remain anonymous.
