One of the Biggest Mistakes You Can Make When You Travel
VANDALIA -- As you start planning for that summer vacation, you'll also need to start planning how to keep your house safe while you are gone.
The first piece of advice: Don't let people know you ever left.
"I'll use check-in sometimes, it just kind of lets people know where you are at where you were going," said Seattle resident Jackie Houser.
"If a lot of people know you're away that's a good way to find out," said Charlotte resident Mike Bryant. "Maybe it's a good way to go by your house and make a visit they should not be authorized to do."
When you arrive at your destination location you may feel tempted to want to check in where you are but Police will tell you that's a bad idea. If you don't want to make yourself vulnerable to thieves, save all those vacation pics for when you're back home. And while you're gone check your privacy settings because even when you are commenting or posting on a friends' timeline, you'll want to make sure to turn off the setting that includes your location with your post.
"It's not the smartest thing but people do it anyway," said Trishna Patel of Dayton.
Jackie Houser says the reason she does it is because she trusts all her Facebook friends.
"I'm only friends on Facebook with people I'm friends in real life with. They already know I'm out of town. I don't have friends on Facebook that I don't know. So I can trust whoever it is and I have a private Facebook so anyone I don't know can't see where I am at," Houser said.
Police say not to befriend someone you don't know.
"It doesn't make sense to me if you don't know the person why do you call them on Facebook that could lead to problems down the road to becoming a crime victim of burglary," said Ron Roberts of Kettering Police Department.
Police also recommend making sure your house looks "lived" in, have a friend or neighbor check it every day, put lights on timers, stop your mail, and ask neighbors to call police if they see anything suspicious. Finally, call police and ask for a vacation house check.
