A Boy Fighting a Terminal Illness Gives Hope on Independence Day

CENTERVILLE -- For many people, the Fourth of July holiday means a day off work and a night filled with celebrations. However, for one boy from Centerville, this holiday meant so much more.

"He never gives up, he's so strong," said Amy Hartman on Wednesday at the Americana Parade in Centerville.

Her son Cameron was full of smiles when he was sitting with the Centerville High School student council waiting for the parade to start. You would never know he is fighting for his life.

"I am inspired by him because I'm always upset and he says mom ill be fine," said Hartman.

In 2011, Cameron was diagnosed with Dock 8 Mutation, a rare immune deficiency syndrome. Only 29 other individuals in the United States have it.  This summer, Cameron will be the first Dock 8 patient to begin treatment for a bone marrow transplant.

"Without trying it, there is no chance of survival, most die by young adulthood," said Hartman, crying.

But, with every step in the parade, it was a reason to look forward. The Centerville High School student council money was raising money for Cameron at the parade. The entire community has raised over $15,000 dollars since he was diagnosed back in October of 2011.

"I just feel like a burden is lifted off me because I don't have to worry about paying for my other kids. I don't think I would want to live anywhere else," said Hartman as tears rolled down her face.

For a little boy dealing with so much, Cameron really is an inspiration.When asked what he would say to other kids dealing with illnesses, he responded, "Be strong."
