A Neighborhood Remembers a Little Girl a Year After her Tragic Death

DAYTON -- A neighborhood is grieving on this Fourth of July, while the rest of the country is celebrating.

A year ago, 7-year-old Robbie Carter ran across Nicholas Avenue to watch fireworks, and was hit by a car.

"Losing your child is something you can't describe, they can't describe unless they've been there," said Natasha Hicks, who lives next door to Robbie Carter's family.

"She was my neighbor and she was a good, nice little girl," she said, "She was always out talking and speaking to everybody. She was just a wonderful little girl and it was just a tragic that that happened to her."

Neighbors started a memorial in the little girl's honor days after the tragic accident, and now they are trying to make it a tradition.

"We put out a little it scented candle with balloons on it so everybody can add a balloon if they want to," said Sonia Clark, neighbor.

Sonia's family started the memorial last year.

"It's to let her family know that the neighborhood still is showing love and support for the family still hoping they get through it with the strength of god," she said.

As families across the country celebrate on Fourth of July, one family and one neighborhood in Dayton is grieving.

"It broke my heart," said Hicks, "I can't describe it it's just a feeling that I don't want anyone to feel it was just tragic."
