Deputy Pleads Not Guilty To Weapons Under Influence Charge
SPRINGFIELD -- A Clark County deputy in trouble over alcohol pleaded not guilty Wednesday.
Christopher Dent is accused of being drunk while carrying a loaded gun over the weekend.
On Monday he showed up in court under the influence. He told the judge he has a problem with alcohol.
He is being held in Tri-County Jail in Champaign County.
Earlier coverage:
SPRINGFIELD -- Clark County Sheriff's Deputy, Christopher Dent appeared in court Monday expected to hear alcohol-related charges he's facing following an arrest over the weekend, but Monday his drinking habits added to his problems.
Dent stepped before the podium admitting to Clark County Judge, Denise Moody he has a problem.
"I have a problem, and it's not that I did it before I came here, I just have an issue with alcohol" said Christopher Dent.
Dent faces charges of possessing weapons while intoxicated. On Saturday, Springfield police arrested Dent at a gas station on Yellow Springs Street while he was allegedly intoxicated with his department issued gun on him, loaded with ammunition.
On Monday, it appeared alcohol caused even more problems for Dent.
Judge Moody: "Are you impaired now Mr. Dent?"
Dent: "I wouldn't say that, but.."
Judge Moody: "What would you say?"
Dent: "Well I do taste alcohol on my breath"
"You should know better than to consume alcohol before coming to court Mr. Dent" said Denise Moody, Clark County Judge.
Dent's courtroom behavior did him no favors, as Judge Moody revoked his initial $1,000 bond, and increased it to $2,500. Dent also must now wear a device which monitors his alcohol consumption.
While an internal investigation gets underway, Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly says this case defies the high standard he ask his deputies to adhere to.
"The public has an expectation if we enforce the law, we should obey the law" said Gene Kelly, Clark County Sheriff.
Clark County residents agree.
"There's a standard to the job and you got to lead by example so if you can't then you shouldn't be doing the job" said Larry Mostowski, Clark County resident.
Following Dent's court appearance, the judge ordered him back into custody.
