How to Keep Your Holiday Budget
WEST CARROLLTON -- If you're like most people, you probably spend more on Christmas every year.
Experts say this year will be no different.
The average family will shell out just under $750, but making a budget and sticking to it can help with those bills come January.
"I see all the different toys and I get a little wilder now than I used to," said Paula Tucker, as she shops with her only grandchild.
She has one trick up her sleeve to stay on track with her holiday budget.
"I know what toys Santa is gonna bring her so I have a list for that," she said.
Experts say making a list is a great first step.
Another one is online, called the "Holiday Planner Calculator." It could be the best tool for parents looking to plan their overall budget.
"An overall budget is certainly the easiest thing to keep track of and you can divide that up by the number of people you have," said John North, president of Better Business Bureau in Dayton.
The calculator says your holiday budget should be no more than 1.5 percent of your annual income.
It also helps you divide that up between gifts, food and more, so you don't go broke.
"My coins, I have to watch my coins. I know what I can afford and what I can't afford," said Tucker, "I definitely don't want to put a lot on the credit card and then when the credit card comes in January you're still paying on Christmas in January and February."
So as you head into the aisles, the best advice is to plan ahead.
"I like to get mine done, my shopping done around this time and in the next couple weeks hope to be done and completed so I'm not out in the crowd trying to buy everything," said Tucker.
Another thing to remember is to factor in the shipping costs when you buy gifts online.
