Provisional Ballots Could Delay Election Results
DAYTON -- Ohio is crucial to the Presidential election, and while it should all be over on Tuesday, a change in policy could leave us waiting ten days to find out who is the next President.
"We will decide the next President," said Melody Kelley, an Ohio voter, "Everyone in the country could be waiting on Ohio's determination."
Provisional ballots aren't counted in Ohio for ten days, and this year there might be more of those than ever before.
"We need to know and we need to know now," said Rebkah, an Ohio voter.
For the first time, Secretary of State John Husted decided to send absentee ballot applications to all of Ohio's 6.9 million voters.
Of those, 1.3-million people requested a ballot, but only 1.1-million were sent back in.
That means the more than 200,0000 voters who didn't mail them back will have to fill out a provisional ballot of they show up at the polls.
"Not knowing what's going on and who's going to be in charge and where we're gonna go and what tactics we're going to take is very concerning," said Rebekah.
The Board of Elections, however, says it's okay, and they've dealt with this before.
"We sent that application out in 2008 and 2010," said Deputy Director Steve Harsman, Montgomery County Board of Elections.
Despite the change this year, Montgomery County's Board says they expect about 14,000 provisional ballots to be filled out this year.
That number is on par with the last Presidential election.
"If there is any federal, state or local races that are potentially close at the end of Tuesday night than those ballots are going to be very, very important," he said.
Those ballots and millions more will decide who wins, so it all comes down to you.
"You need to get out here and vote, because everything is going to affect, not just me standing here, but everybody," said Rebekah.
Absentee ballots have to be mailed by today. They have to arrive at the Board of Elections by November 16th.
So there could be even more votes that we are waiting to count.
