School Districts Moving on After Levy Defeats
VANDALIA -- Thousands of people around the Miami Valley today headed to the polls for a special election.

The Vandalia-Butler School District put a 6.99 mills levy in front of voters for a second time. Tonight that levy was heavily voted down by a margin of 56 percent to 44 percent.

School officials hoped the levy would keep them from cutting services and programs within the schools.

The lines were long at First Baptist Church in Vandalia with voters deciding on the district's fate for the second time. At the church ABC 22 / FOX 45 found those who supported the levy, and those who were strongly against it.

Many of the parents whose kids are no longer in the district voted no.

"I have a problem with the schools asking for more money when I've seen the progress they've made like building schools, tearing schools down," Sheila Earley of Vandalia said. "That's all good, but some of us who no longer have children in the area like me, I have to vote no on it."

But for parents with kids who are still attending schools in the district, it was a no-brainer.

"With all the cuts the state has made, the school's got to have money somewhere," Mark Helke of Vandalia. "I know it is an unpopular thing, you gotta have some money to operate. You've got to meet them somewhere and say, yeah, we need good schools and it takes money to run good schools."

What it all boiled down to was whether or not voters would be willing to pay extra money on their taxes.

"I understand it takes a lot and we have a big education to pay for, but the point is I think it needs to start at the top from now on," Earley said. "I'm tired of things going from the bottom up anymore, taxes are enough."

Superintendent Christy L. Donnelly released this statement regarding the cuts,

"Obviously we are disappointed with the results. Our supporters worked

hard to educate our community about the need for this levy, and I'd like

to thank them for their time and commitment. The failure of this levy

did not eliminate the need for operating dollars for our classrooms.

November will be our last chance to protect our classrooms and student

activities from massive, unprecedented cuts."School Districts Moving on After Levy Defeats
