UPDATE: Local Couple Injured in Colorado Shooting
ST. PARIS -- Two people from the Miami Valley were shot during the rampage at the Colorado movie theater. . Twenty seven year old Matt McQuinn of Springfield was shot several times and his girlfriend, 26 year old Samatha Yowler of St. Paris, was shot in the leg.
Yowler and McQuinn's parents jumped on the first plane they could and flew out to Colorado. Their step parents have been giving updates. Yowler had surgery on her leg late Friday afternoon. McQuinn's family hadn't gotten word on his condition or what hospital he's at as of Friday evening.
People in St. Paris and those who know them find it hard to believe the massacre happened. "We live in such a small area so somebody you know actually goes through something like that, that's hard to kind of wrap your head around," said Yowler's friend Talia Kauffman-Diaz.
Diaz has known Samantha Yowler ever since grade school. They graduated from high school together eight years ago. Friday morning she got a text message that her good friend had been shot in the leg at the Colorado movie theater. "I've been on an emotional roller coaster all morning," she said.
Diaz can only imagine what Yowler and McQuinn went through while being shot at. "From what I know of their relationship, they're deeply in love, they really love each other,cared a lot about each other," she said.
Diaz hasn't talked to her buddy since the shooting. "I know Sam's going to be alright. Physically she will recover from it but, emotionally she's going to, this situation is going to change her life forever, just what she went through," she said.
At the local cafe, people have been talking about the hometown connection to the shooting. "Especially when it's that far away from here and it actually affects the community and it does shock you and you hope and pray for the family'," said Joe Brade, owner of Braden's Cafe.
"My prayers and thoughts go out to Sam, Nick and Matt. Their families as well as everybody else," said Diaz.
Yowler and McQuinn moved to Colorado in November where her brother Nick has lived for 10 years. The three of them were at the movies together. Nick Yowler was not injured.

Samantha told relatives she can't find out any information about her
boyfriend because of health privacy laws. She said she saw her boyfriend
get shot several times, but were then separated in the chaos.
Samantha
was scheduled to undergo surgery at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Her brother,
Nick, who also lives in the Denver area, is with her at the hospital.
Massie said he talked to Samantha on the phone, but said she was groggy.
According to Massie, Nick called his parents about 3am Eastern Time, while he was outside the movie theater and not injured.
He
said the previews had ended and it was at the opening of the movie when
the doors flew open and the shooter walked in. Nick said the suspect
just started shooting. He thought it was some type of prop for the
movie.
Samantha and Matt have been dating a couple of years.
