Maneuvering Through Traffic During NCAA Games

DAYTON -- Basketball fans from all over have come to the Miami Valley this week to enjoy the first few rounds of games for the NCAA Tournament.

However, with all the out of town visitors, traffic may be dicey for the rest of the week. Downtown Dayton exit closures could cause some backups for fans getting to and from the game.

For the most part, fans didn't see traffic as a major problem Tuesday, but for local businesses that extra traffic means more money.

UD Arena will host 10 games through Sunday with teams including Ohio State, Indiana and Notre Dame.

"It's a real nice arena, great place to see games so it's a way for us to get together and see some good basketball games," said Bob Marrow, from Virginia.

Tickets were sold out for Tuesday's games which mean the arena saw more than 13,000 fans and all of those fans headed to the game caused a few minor back-ups.

But people found ways to work around it.

"We parked over at the Marriott and rode the bus over, it was pretty good, I mean for 5 bucks you cant beat it," said Dort Elsner from Kettering.

Many locals say it's a good thing the arenas further south than the 75 exits that are closed in downtown Dayton. They say if it wasn't, traffic could have been worse.

"Did you guys experience any traffic on the way up here," Reporter, Annette Peagler asked one fan.

"Not really that bad, we thought it would be worse," said Deb Carter, from Dayton.

Local businesses like Fusian likes that extra traffic.

"We handed out a couple of menus and stuff at the arena just to spread the word out to those visitors, people coming from Indiana, Ohio State, James Madison just getting the word out to people that don't know about us and bring them down to us," Devin Whitney a shift leader at Fusian.

Employees have been prepping for the big crowds this week - which they hope will result in big profits.

"Yesterday and today we've had a little more business than normal for a Monday and Tuesday usually the beginning of the week isn't as busy as the end of the week we've definitely had a little more business than these last two days," said Whitney.
