Designer on a Dime is Put to the Test
DAYTON -- We all want to look our best, but most of us can't afford designer quality clothes.
There are companies out there claiming they can give you a designer clothes delivered right to your door, and you just pay pennies to wear them.
It's called Le Tote.
The web site lets you order expensive designers clothes, have them shipped to your door, wear them as many times as you want, and ship them back.
Once you do that, they send you even more clothes.
Inside the tote you get a dress, a shirt or two, and maybe even a skirt. It also includes two accessories. In all, it's worth about 200-bucks.
The service costs just 49-dollars.
But, like an exclusive club, Le Tote only accepts people on a referral basis, but starting March first, that's gonna change, and it will be open to everyone.
That's good news, considering I had to wait two weeks to get onto the site. The owners, who've only been at it for six months say they needed to start slow.
"We've been able to work out a lot of the kinks and really figure out who our customer is and what exactly they're looking for," said Rakesh Tondon, co-founder of Le Tote web site.
Once you're signed up, you have to answer a series of fashion questions, and when that's done, a fashion advisor chooses the clothes for you, but you never actually see them.
That's a big negative for Christine Wright.
"I would like to have a little more of a handle on maybe picking the clothes that they do send me a little more selection and a little bit more buyer friendly," said Christine Wright.
But the web site owners say, that's also changing.
"We're also doing an online virtual fitting room, which will give people the ability to see what sizes fit them perfectly," said Tondon.
Once the first tote arrives, we take a look to see if the clothes are the high quality they promise.
The outfit includes a shirt and a necklace, no problems here, and sending back the items is really easy.
It takes about three days to get new clothes, but eventually we ran into a problem most people buying clothes face.
One of the shirts in the last tote, didn't fit.
"Fit of the designer and a certain brand I think every designer has a different style and fit and I would really want to make sure it fit me before they sent it to me," said Wright.
The web site owners say they plan to give people more control over sizes and styles with the March first change.
"Going forward what we're doing, we're giving the regular people the ability to pick and choose items. this problem is going to go away," said Brett Northart, co-founder of Le Tote web site.
So, Le Tote promises to deal with all the problems of picking your own clothes and sizes, but for Wright, it will always be a case of buyer beware.
"I'm just not sure right now about the type of clothing the designers that they're featuring if they're even designers that I would like the style of clothing," said Wright.
