Eyesore Near Racino Hurting Businesses, May be Foreclosed
HARRISON TOWNSHIP -- With the Dayton Racino set to open a little more than a year from now there's one major eye soar on the way there. Overgrown weeds, trash and vandalism have overcome the vacant and boarded up structure that was the Dayton Executive Inn. Since 2007 it has been left to rot.
"It's really a shame that it's gone because it used to be a beautiful hotel," said Sarah Gallivan who works at the bread store across the street. She says the disintegrating hotel has led to disintegrating business.
"Now it's terrible because people are scared to come by here and I hate to see it falling down," she said.
This hotel is the first thing racino goers will see as they take the Needmore exit off of Interstate 75. And with the $125 million facility coming to town business owners and nearby residents have been complaining that something needs to be done.
"I drive the other way so I don't have to look at it," said neighbor Darla Book. "Tear it down and put something else there."
We went to Harrison Township officials to find out what will become of this abandoned property. We found out just last month Harrison Township contacted Montgomery County prosecutors who filed a tax foreclosure against the owners who are almost $1.6 million behind on taxes. If that goes through, Harrison Township will gain ownership of the $2.4 million dollar hotel.
"This area needs to be built back up. it's a good area we lost Frisch's we lost Rex down the street," said Gallivan. "It's really a shame they need to be build backup it's a great city."
The township already has a buyer in place who will pay the legal fees and take over the hotel. After acquiring this hotel the owner will have 12 months to tear it down according to this initial agreement from Harrison Township. The owner will then have a 6 month window to we develop the hotel. Harrison Township want this project as close to completion as possible before the middle of 2014 when the racino opens.
