Special Needs Teacher Indicted for Assaulting Disabled Child
DAYTON -- The Dayton teacher who was accused in October of assaulting a disabled Meadowdale High School student has been indicted by the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. said Georgia Cox, 49, is a special education teacher who is certified to care for and instruct handicapped children. Heck said the 16-year-old boy has limited mobility and limited verbal skills and would occasionally swat at teachers or other students to gain attention. According to the Prosecutor, Cox approached the child while he was eating breakfast in the cafeteria and struck him with a closed-fist punch.

Cox is indicted on one count of assault as a caretaker on a functionally impaired victim, a fourth-degree felony. She is out of jail on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned February 12.

"This defendant is trained and certified on how to interact with mentally and physically handicapped children," Heck said. "Instead of the quality instruction and education this student deserved, the defendant physically attacked this special needs child -- conduct that is inexcusable."

Teacher Charged In Assault on Disabled Student (VIDEO)

DAYTON -- A teacher has been charged with assaulting a disabled Meadowdale High School student.

Georgia B. Cox, 49, of Dayton is charged with a fourth-degree felony assault, and if convicted, could be punishable by up to 18 months incarceration and up to a $5,000 fine.

Cox, a special education teacher at Meadowdale, is accused of assaulting a student who is confined to a wheelchair and has limited mobility and limited verbal skills.

She was arrested Tuesday, October 16 and is out of jail on a $10,000 bond. The case now will be considered for indictment by a grand jury.

“We depend upon our teachers to protect and educate our children. It is especially troubling when a special education teacher is accused of assaulting a handicapped, special needs child,” Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. said during the announcement of the charges.
