University of Dayton Student Housing Scares
DAYTON -- Three safety scares inside student housing in University of Dayton off campus neighborhood.
Just last night, firefighters were called to a home on Kiefaber Street.
"There was just like a small hole, over there by the vent and you could see our basement," said Margaret Barrett, student living inside the home.
That hole forced them to call for help.
"They went in the basement and checked it out from underneath," said Barrett.
While on scene Tuesday night, firefighters and the university deemed the house safe, saying the cause was an uneven floor joist from a previous repair.
"They did a good job of checking out house so I feel better," said Barrett.
But just over the weekend, two homes near campus were evacuated.
One on Frericks Way and another on Lawnview Avenue, after students reported the floor shifted.
University leaders say that's because there was a large number of people inside each home.
We requested an on-camera interview with a representative from the University, it was decline.
Instead, they sent us a statement about their plans to keep students safe.
It states, "Upper-class students who reside in University-owned houses and apartments will receive notices of occupancy limits..."
It goes on to say, "Students will be held accountable for failing to comply..."
This week university engineers will be posting signs, telling students the maximum number of people allowed inside their home.
And while students understand why it's being done, they're not sure the parties will end.
"I think the University of Dayton and student neighborhood is a very fun area, so I really don't think people are going to stop," said Thomas Goss, sophomore at the University of Dayton.
As a result of the recent scares, University leaders are also asking that if students see a large number of people inside a home, to not enter it and call the public safety department.
