UD Plans Week of Events Celebrating King's Birthday
DAYTON -- The University of Dayton plans a week of events to celebrate the birthday of civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. beginning Tuesday, Jan. 15. Events are free and open to the public:

• Tuesday, Jan. 15
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kennedy Union Torch Lounge
Celebration and Kick-Off Table: Stop by the birthday party for the Rev. King.

• Wednesday, Jan. 16
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kennedy Union Torch Lounge
Faculty panel: A faculty panel will discuss their experiences with the Rev. King's work and legacy in their own work. The Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion is sponsoring this event. Call 937-229-4073 for more information.

• Thursday, Jan. 17
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kennedy Union Torch Lounge
King's Dream, Chaminade's Vision, Your Future: A panel discussion comparing the Marianist family and the Rev. King's visions. The Society of Mary and the Office of Multicultural Affairs are sponsoring the event. Call 937-229-3634 for more information.

• Friday, Jan. 18
9 a.m. to 11 p.m. ArtStreet
"Solidarity: A Day of Words, A Night of Art for Dr. King," Friday, Jan. 18, ArtStreet. Presented by ArtStreet and the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

UD Speaks, all day, ArtStreet Studio E. Create posters influenced by the words and imagery of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Paint and poster board will be provided to design an inspired message that will be staked into the Humanities lawn along with other campus and community members' art, creating a collage of original art work.

A Night in '63 Vinyl Party, 6-8 p.m., ArtStreet Studio D. Dance and groove to the vinyl sounds from the civil rights era including music from Stax Records (Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes) and Motown (Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin). The University's spoken word organization, UKURI, will perform pieces influenced by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company will showcase a very intimate dance piece for this special evening.

4 Little Girls Film Screening, 8 p.m., ArtStreet Studio B. Spike Lee's powerful documentary about the notorious bombing of an African-American church in 1963. Hosted by associate professor of religious studies Cecilia Moore.

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Roesch Library
Documentary film: Citizen King: Using the personal recollections, diaries, letters and eyewitness accounts of friends, family, journalists, law enforcement officers and historians, this film brings fresh insights to the Rev. King's journey, his leadership and his remarkable impact.

• Monday, Jan. 21
9:30 a.m. Drew Health Center, 1323 West Third Street, downtown Dayton
MLK Memorial March and Rally: The University will join the city of Dayton's annual community march to the Dayton Convention Center. Click here for more information.

• Tuesday, Jan. 22
7:30 a.m. Kennedy Union Ballroom *Reservation required
MLK breakfast: Join the campus in celebrating the life and legacy of the Rev. King. The keynote speaker is Bro. Ray Fitz, S.M., former University of Dayton president and current Ferree Professor of Social Justice for the Fitz Center for Leadership in Community. The Office of Multicultural Affairs is sponsoring the event. Call 937-229-3634 for information.

Noon to 2 p.m. Science Center 114 and 114B
From the March to the Movement – Open Forum: Participants are invited to engage in idea-sharing and dialogue on how to continue the Rev. King's vision in their personal, professional and academic lives. The Office of Multicultural Affairs is sponsoring the event.

7:30 p.m. RecPlex
Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Address – Eboo Patel: Founder and executive director of the Interfaith Youth Core, Eboo Patel will keynote the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration. He's written Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation. In The Washington Post's "The Faith Divide" blog, Patel considers the religious events and issues that bring people together or drive them apart. A book signing will follow.
