RTA Seeks Help for Snow Complaints at Bus Stops
MONTGOMERY COUNTY -- Drivers aren't the only one who have to worry about the accumulating snow, walkers like Brittany Geter do to.

"It's very horrible it's hard to get around I done fell a couple times I really wish they would shovel the sidewalks," said Geter as she fell trying to climb over a pile of snow after she got off her bus stop on Springboro Pike.

And she's not the only one, all around town, we heard people complaining about getting around town with piles like this in their way.

"Yesterday I got side-swiped by a lady," said RTA rider Jenna Belle O'Malley-Jones. "She actually hit me with her car and then kept driving but there was no way for me to walk so I don't know what you wanted me to do. "I really think the city needs to take time out to shovel the sidewalk so people can feel safe riding the bus," said Geter.

"You have to cross the crosswalk and then you have to get to the bus stop so if you're going to cross through the crosswalk and then try to get to the bus stop if you don't want to slip on ice you have to walk to the street to get to the bus stop if they would just shovel to the bus stop that would be easier," said O'Malley-Jones.

The RTA has about 3,500 bus stops in the area. Many of them look just like the one on Third Street with piles of snow right in front of the stop but the RTA director Frank Ecklar says clearing of all 3,500 stops is a nearly impossible feat.

"We really rely on the jurisdiction in the communities to do that as much as possible. With the 3.500 bus stops logistically one entity doing that is a challenge if we have everybody pulling together and working together it would certainly help out with mobility not just for RTA but folks who were walking automobiles Etc...," said Ecklar.

He says he needs private property owners and business owners to help clear their streets so it doesn't fall strictly on RTA and so the riders can feel safe getting on the bus.

"You don't want to walk on the street because you might get hit by car and you don't want to walk on the sidewalk me I'm pregnant so you don't want to fall in slip on ice," said O'Malley-Jones.

"I definitely think it's a safety issue," said Geter. "You can definitely get hurt if the sidewalks aren't properly shoveled."

With every snow storm Ecklar says the RTA brings in extra people to clear off as many paths as possible.

The RTA wants you to give them a call at 425-8300 if you notice any spots that make it tough to get around.
