Locals Digging Out the Snow

DARKE COUNTY -- The post-Christmas storm that rocked the Miami Valley brought with it fierce winds and dumped several inches of snow.

Some of the worse-hit counties had levels 2 and 3 snow emergencies.  Thursday, many residents in Darke and Preble counties spent much of the day digging themselves out from under mounds of snow.

If you listen closely, you may be able to hear the scraping of shovels all across the Miami Valley.

Snow plows were out en masse throughout the night and early morning hard at work.

In the more rural counties to the north and west, they may have had it the worse.

"I tried to get out in my four-wheel-drive, and it got stuck in my driveway," Dan Shellet said.

Dan and Robin Shelley say they’ve been dealing with more than a foot of snow, especially when snow drift is factored in.

"State Road 40 was drifting over pretty bad, the plow would come through and then it would drift right back over after they've come through," Dan said.

Robin Shelley had seemingly a mountain of snow from her driveway alone.

While many kids relished in the snow, drivers in rural areas had plenty of reasons to still be careful.

The state highways and city roads were mostly clear, but rural roads had not received as much treatment, resulting in slick, slushy road conditions.

Dan Kessler Lives off rural Banta Road in Preble County.
He says, after two years, he’s finally getting to put his snow blower to good use, by clearing not only his driveway, but his neighbor’s, too.

"He gets home at the middle of the night, and this is what he woke up to so I want to make sure that he's cleared out so he doesn't have to worry about that when he gets up," Kessler said.

“Last year we hardly got any snow at all. This year I think Mother Nature is after us,” he said.

Much of the snow already on the ground is expected to stay there for the next couple of days as temps will be hovering at or below freezing.
