More Changes on I-75 Through Downtown, Soon All Access Closed Off
DAYTON -- There are some big changes to how you access 75 from downtown, and soon access will be cut off entirely.
Drivers now need to find another way to get onto I-75 Northbound from 2nd and 3rd streets.
"In general it's just a hassle, everybody who's trying to get around the city," said James Howard, who prefers the RTA over driving.
By mid-December, all access to and from Downtown will be cut off. Drivers headed North into the city are encouraged to use Edwin C. Moses boulevard or Route 35 to access downtown. Drivers headed South should use Main street.
"I haven't actually used it, but I saw it on TV, like I said, and it looks like, confusing," said Roger Morris.
Many people ask about the timing with the holidays.
"There's a lot of pros, a lot of cons... it's a touchy subject for some people," said Howard.
ODOT rep, Mandi Abner, says they have to work by the contractors schedules, and they do recognize drivers frustrations.
"We're just asking drivers to be patient. We know that this is a little bit of an inconvenience for them. But we're trying to do everything we can to make those detour routes as accessible as possible," said Abner.
Most people we talked with say they know the end will justify the means. Morris has seen positive results further South towards Cincinnati.
"I was amazed at how fast I got down there... because the roads are nice and wide it seems like it took half the time. So maybe what they're doing up here is worthwhile."
"A lady came to a complete stop because she didn't know what was going on. So it is confusing but I think in the long run it will benefit everybody, too... making the highways bigger," said Talbott.
On Monday night, some of the lanes will shift on 75. Officials just ask that drivers pay extra close attention and take is slow through there. People will have to get used to their detour because the final phase of the I-75 modernization project will not be completed until 2016.
