WASTE WATCH: $650,000 Spent On Unused Covered Bridge In Greene County

GREENE COUNTY -- $650,000 Spent On Unused Covered Bridge In Greene County ABC22/Fox 45 is working for you to uncover government waste in Ohio and Washington, D.C.  In a special Waste Watch investigation, reporter Liza Danver discovers thousands of your hard earned tax dollars are going to fund a bridge that isn't even functional.

Wastebook 2012 by Republican Sen. Tom Coburn comes out Tuesday. The book is shedding light on what some consider widespread government waste. It highlights 100 controversial projects funded by your tax dollars.  One of those projects is restoring an unused, covered bridge in Greene County.

The Stephenson Road covered bridge in Xenia Township isn't connected to a road or walking trail.  Built in 1877, the bridge has been out of commission for about a decade due to deterioration.

"I think it's wonderful, I really do.  I think we don't have enough history.  We need to restore our history and keep it around," said Debbie Pitzer of Greene County.

The federal government granted Greene Co. $520,000 of your tax payer dollars for restoration.  It's part of the National Historic Covered Bridge Preservation Program.  Funds Congress allocates to the program must pay for covered bridge projects.

However in order cover the $650,000 price tag on complete bridge rehabilitation, the county has to shell out  $130,000 local tax dollars.

"It's a waste of money.  Leave it alone the way it is.  It's lasted all this time.  It'll last longer," said Stanley Michael who lives across the street from the bridge.

Even after restoration is complete, the bridge is still not going to be
functional.  The county spent more than a half million dollars on a concrete bridge located 100 feet away from the covered bridge, several years ago.  The concrete bridge is still going to handle all the traffic.

"I think it's worth it.  I think it's for our future generations to see how things used to be," Pitzer said.

"To do it now is just a waste of money, tax payers money," disagreed Michael.

Most county and Xenia Township officials defend using your tax dollars, since the federal government requires the grant money be spent restoring covered bridges.

The county doesn't have a set date for re-construction on the bridge to start.WASTE WATCH: $650,000 Spent On Unused Covered Bridge In Greene County
