WASTE WATCH: How Much is Early Voting Fight Costing Taxpayers?

WASTE WATCH -- The early voting fight here in Ohio had grabbed national attention.  With all the back and forth of whether or not people can vote in the three days leading up to the election, our Waste Watch team decided to look into how much this fight is costing tax payers.

If you head down to the Montgomery County Board of Elections you will find a steady stream of voters coming in and out, in fact officials tell us early voters are coming out in record numbers.  What you won't find yet is the answer as to how long early voting will last this election season.  That's because right now Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted is appealing to the Supreme
Court after a lower court ruled he couldn't cut the last three days of
early voting.

Judy Chesen of Centerville cast her vote early, "There's still a segment of the population that still finds it easier or easiest to vote on weekends I think they should be given that opportunity."

Not everyone sees it that way, like Rob Scott, the chair of the Montgomery County Republican Party, "Anyone can go down to the Board of Elections now and vote during the extended hours, they're open from Monday through Friday. Additionally, anyone can cast an absentee ballot. John Husted - the secretary of state - sent a absentee voter request form to every voter in Ohio."

So how much is this back and forth costing us - the taxpayers?

So far, the state's been billed $11,500 from outside counsel, the attorneys charge about $200 an hour, and more bills are coming in because there's still the Supreme Court appeal to consider.
.
Most Democrats see the appeal as a waste of money.  But for Montgomery County to open up on that weekend prior to the election, it's about $750 an hour and that adds up to nearly the amount the state will end up spending on the lawsuits.

Montgomery County officials say if there is early voting they'll be ready.

"From Montgomery County's perspective,'' BOE Director Steve Harsman told us, ''we support early voting and we're really hoping to have that opportunity for that last weekend."

The county had already budgeted for those last three days.

As for why the state is using outside counsel in this fight instead of the Attorney General's office? It's because the lawsuit against the state names both Sec. of State Jon Husted and Attorney General Mike DeWine.
