Waste Watch: Feds Mandate Signal Lights with Arrows

DAYTON -- You may have noticed some changes on the roadways, it's in certain red lights. The Feds mandated the changes, on the backs of ohio taxpayers.

"I'd rather see the big circle. It's bigger than just the arrow," said Tim Focht of Dayton.

That big red circle is no longer there when you're taking a left in a turn only lane. Now, it's a red arrow. It's a new federal regulation, costing Ohio taxpayers $16,700.

Focht does not think it is a good use of taxpayer money. The Feds reasoning for the change is to quote "enhance uniformity" and eliminate "left turn signal" signs. They decided on it back in 2009, and crews have just finished installing them here in Ohio. Some like the idea.

"If the government changed it, I hope it will be safe for us," said Michelle Taylor of Dayton.

"Yeah, I think it's a waste of money," said Chris Osborne of Moraine.

"People still don't pay attention," said Focht.

At $26 a light and the federally mandated changes now in place, some can't help but stop and wonder what else our money could have gone towards.

"It's a bit ridiculous, they spend money on that when they could spend money to fix the roads and potholes that we have here," said Osborne.Waste Watch: Feds Mandate Signal Lights with Arrows
