Waste Watch: Dayton Officials Travel to Israel

DAYTON -- The City of Dayton and Montgomery County officials spend more than $10,000 a year to send leaders to Israel.

They say it's essential to developing business relationships with the middle eastern country.

"Israel is a very good fit for the Dayton region," Montgomery County Interim Administrator Joe Tuss said.

County and City leaders are betting your tax dollars that what we have in common with Israel will lead to more jobs.

"If you look at their technology development, if you look at their strengths in Aerospace," Tuss said. "Sensors technology, medical technology, entreneurship, it's a very good fit."

Since 2008, city and county leaders have taken three trips to Israel. Most of it has been paid by private donations, but $43,200 had to be picked up by taxpayers. Local leaders who've taken part in the trips say the potential contracts and jobs that could be filled here make that money well spent.

"The magnitude of the Israeli Aerospace Industry aligns perfectly with the expertise that's here in the Dayton Region," Joseph Zeis said.

The Dayton Region Israel Trade Alliance is starting to pay off. Two local companies have already landed contracts from Israel. Advocates for the partnership say that early success is just a taste of what we could build long term.

"The normal time period is about 10 years from technology to commercialization," Dayton Assistant City Manager Shelley Dickstein said. "So, we're intersecting in that time frame at various points with various companies. But we've had some immediate successes with our mission. A couple of licenses with ID cast, and now we're trying to build on those."

The partnership has a man working full time in Israel whose sole job is to find new business opportunities for the Dayton region. His salary is paid with private donations.
