Waste Watch: Schools Spending for Special Elections

WASTE WATCH -- Elections are expensive and several local school districts desperate for money, are part of a special election on August 7th in hopes of pass tax levies.  But those elections cost money.

One district, Vandalia-Butler, has a 6.99 mill levy on the ballot.  They will spend $24,000 on the the August 7th special election.

Michael Harmon, who has kids and grandkids that live in the district thinks that price tag is too high, "Wrong, very wrong. I don't know what they're going to do. They're going to have a hard time. I just hate to see it go into other areas where we're going to lose people, lose jobs."

Susan Lemone, another Vandalia resident feels the same way, "It's a big risk is what I think. I know the district's in trouble and need money but I still think they should wait and not spend the 20-thousand."

If the levy passes, it would help bring back some of the major cuts the district's already made, like transportation for younger students.

Vandalia-Butler Schools superintendent Christy Donnelly tells us, "If we wait until November and then we fail, the risk associated with what we lose is so dramatic that the cost of spending the money in August - that cost outweighs."

Other district's with either renewal or additional levies on the ballot August 7th include:
Xenia Community Schools which have spent $31,000.
Northmont Schools has dropped $20,000.
Tipp City Schools is expected pay out between $10,000-$12,000.
While Bethel will pay out $3,600.

Many district leaders say the May primary election would have worked for these levy votes, but since the state took so long to decide when Ohio's primary would actually be, the district's missed the deadline to put their measures on the ballot, forcing their hand into a special election.
