WASTE WATCH: Clayton Development Stalls

WASTE WATCH -- The city of Clayton invested more than $1 million to try to develop a nice piece of property known as the ''Village of North Clayton'', but as our Waste Watch crew found out, the land hasn't developed into to much.

The vision of the ''Village of North Clayton'' was shops lining the streets and homes lining the outskirts.  In reality though the development is full of empty lots, waiting for development.

Joyce Dietering is the Mayor of Clayton, she tells us "Considering the state of the economy, it's doing as well as could be expected. Maybe even a little better. Of course we had high hopes when it first started that they would be able to move more quickly but none of us had any effect on that."

The developer broke ground just before the economy tanked in 2008.  The city invested $1.1 million in tax payer dollars to put in a sewer and water line.  The town gets that money back through "impact fees", but those are dependent on retailers moving in and without those it takes longer for the money to get back into city coffers.

"Bringing the sewer out certainly will enable development in the whole area.'', Dietering said, ''Now it's out here,  it was necessary to bring it out for the other areas of development for Wenger Road so we feel like it's been a good investment as far as that goes.''

Mayor Dietering is hopeful the Villages of North Clayton will thrive soon, ''There's a lot of investment up in this area. And we're actually optimistic about what's possible out here with an improving economy. We're bound to move the housing forward and hopefully get some commercial development going again."
