WASTE WATCH: Leaving the Light On, Taxpayers Footing the Bill

WASTE WATCH DAYTON -- Government buildings with the lights on all hours of the day with tax payers footing the bill.

The Federal Bankruptcy Court in downtown Dayton. Come down in the middle of the night - any day of the week - and the lights are on. We tracked this nearly every night, for three weeks.

"If they're leaving the lights on, who says to turn them off? What benefit do they get from turning them off other than making more work for themselves. Since they don't have to worry where the money's coming from... they just tax it," said Paul Schweizer of Dayton.

Over the weekend, all the lights remain on. Even in these back offices where it's clear, no one is working on the weekend.

"There's not enough energy put in to how to save on overhead and really actually use money the right way. So leaving the lights on doesn't surprise me at all," said Jared Smith of Dayton.

The Bankruptcy Court building is managed by Miller Valentine. A representative told us the owner is making the building green - with high efficiency lighting. They're still working on the timing, and exactly where the lights are needed. This should cut down on costs for the feds to lease the building.

At the Federal Courthouse and office building... fewer lights are left on. A Rep with the General Services Administration -- the agency that overseas Federal buildings - says there's a new lighting control system.

Cat Langel's statement in part reads, "GSA's priority is to reduce energy consumption at federal buildings across the country. GSA continues to make necessary adjustments to the building automation system, lighting controls, and sensor tie-ins to ensure proper operations throughout the building."

City and county buildings were all dark - only lights on for cleaning crews. Taxpayers we talked with say leaving the lights on is a good metaphor for the federal government in general.

"I think it's a very small example for a much larger problem. In and of itself it's kind of miniscule, but it does sort of shine the light on a much much bigger problem. It's something people can understand. At home, they would turn their lights off," said Schweizer.WASTE WATCH: Leaving the Light On, Taxpayers Footing the Bill
