OUR WEEKLY COOL SCHOOLS SEGMENT KICKS OFF THIS WEEK WHERE WE SHOWCASE THE COOLEST SCHOOLS IN THE MIAMI VALLEY.
THIS WEEK HILARY ZALLA TAKES US TO KETTERING WHERE VAN BUREN MIDDLE SCHOOL EIGHTH GRADERS ARE PADDLING THEIR WAY TO VICTORY!
8th grader Grace Oldfield is enjoying a nice boat ride through Lincoln Park fountain...except her boat is made of cardboard and duct tape...and she is surrounded by a cheering crowd!
nats of crowd
This is the Van Buren Middle School honors integrated science classes annual Kayak Race....and Grace is in the lead!
Grace Oldfield says, "my boat kept going sideways and i had to keep it straight but from the start i was in the lead"
the same can't be said for classmate madeline karolik...she can't seem to get into her boat. Samantha Turner is in a struggling third....but Beth Ann Powers is holding her own in second place!
"i was a little bit scared getting in and water started coming in because i was like keep moving"
Madeline...still having trouble getting into her kayak...i don't blame her...the rules are to make a life size boat only of cardboard and tape. The project incorporates STEM concepts, including teamwork, scale models and scientific design.
nats of crowd
And, here comes the finish line! Grace proves victorious...Beth Ann makes it in second...and we will just say Madeline and Samantha are enjoying the cool water on a hot day.
Beth Ann Powers says, "we went through a lot of hard work and i didnt want our hard work to be for nothing i just wanted to get to the otherside."
Grace says she learned a lot, "what did you learn from this? duct tape is useful and the more duct take the better"
Alright so, I guess Grace's boat is the safest....why not test it out.
"this is actually really relaxing. you made a good boat. applause!!"
